The essentials

Adjustable shade or a fixed backdrop? Choose side by side.

Choose fabric screens when you want adjustable shade and privacy that can be raised to reopen the view. Choose fixed slatted walls when you want a permanent, architectural edge with gaps for light and air. You can combine suitable options and leave useful entrances open, provided each accessory matches the model and opening.

  • Fabric visibility changes with light and viewing angle.
  • Match every screen or wall to its model and opening.
  • Leave clear routes for people, furniture and controls.

Compare the options

What is the difference between pergola screens and slatted walls?

A fabric screen changes with the way you use the garden. Lower it when the sun is low or you want a more sheltered corner, then raise it when you prefer a clear view. A slatted wall stays in place, giving the pergola a defined backdrop throughout the day. The choice is as much about how you move through the space as how it looks.

LuxSol’s pergola screens use Textilene fabric guided in a matching zipped frame. Manual and electric options are available for compatible models and openings. The slatted pergola walls use fixed horizontal aluminium slats; they do not rotate or retract.

Side option Everyday benefit What to plan around
Manual fabric screen Adjust shade and the view by hand. Reach and access to operate it, plus compatibility with the exact opening.
Electric fabric screen Raise and lower the fabric using a remote. Compatible Como or Tora openings, power and installation arrangements.
Fixed slatted wall A permanent backdrop that retains gaps for daylight and airflow. The opening stays occupied; preserve another useful route in and out.
Open side An uninterrupted view and easy circulation. No added side screening at that opening.

Neither a screen nor a slatted wall turns a pergola into a sealed indoor room. Think of them as ways to shape an outdoor space: a little more shade beside a dining table, a backdrop to the sofa, or an open front that connects to the lawn.

Privacy & daylight

How much privacy do pergola screens provide?

Fabric screens provide a degree of privacy, but they are not blackout panels. Visibility depends on the light on each side, the viewing angle and the surroundings. A fabric that looks darker or more opaque in one photograph can look more transparent in another setting without being a different material.

Consider the view from the places that matter: your dining chair, a neighbour’s window and the path beside the pergola. Check the situation during the day and after lighting is switched on. Do not assume that a screen which gives a secluded feeling in daylight will provide the same visual barrier after dark.

Slatted walls offer partial screening through a different design. Their gaps remain open, so the view varies with where you sit or stand. They can work well behind seating when you want a sense of enclosure without filling the side with a continuous panel. If privacy is the main reason for buying, visit the LuxSol showroom to compare the materials and sightlines in person.

Manual or electric

Which screen controls work with your pergola?

Start with compatibility, then consider convenience. Aura supports compatible manual screens; electric screens are not an Aura option. Como and Tora offer manual or electric screens for suitable 3m and 4m openings. Tora’s longer 5m and 6m front and rear openings use electric screens.

A manual screen can suit an easily reached side where you are happy to adjust it by hand. An electric screen can be convenient when you expect to change the position frequently or prefer remote operation from the seating area. Both choices still need a clear operating path and correct installation.

For a compact compatible opening, compare the 3m manual pergola screen with the 3m electric pergola screen. These are nominal opening sizes, not measurements to use for fabrication or a promise that the accessory fits any three-metre gap.

Roof control and side control are separate decisions. An electric-roof pergola does not require every compatible side to have electric operation. Our manual vs electric pergola guide explains the roof decision; use the screen configuration for your chosen model to settle the sides.

Match each opening

How do you choose the correct screen or wall size?

Match the accessory to the model, nominal opening and fitting position. Do not round a measured gap up to the next advertised screen size. Frame profiles and mounting details matter alongside width, especially if you are adding accessories to an existing pergola.

Pergola Front and rear openings End openings
Aura 3×3m / 3×4m 3m / 4m manual screens; compatible slatted walls. 3m manual screens or compatible slatted walls.
Como 3×3m / 3×4m 3m / 4m manual or electric screens; compatible slatted walls. 3m manual or electric screens; compatible slatted walls.
Tora 4×4m 4m manual or electric screens; compatible slatted walls. 4m manual or electric screens; compatible slatted walls.
Tora 5×3m / 5×4m 5m electric screens. 3m / 4m manual or electric screens; compatible slatted walls.
Tora 6×3m / 6×4m 6m electric screens. 3m / 4m manual or electric screens; compatible slatted walls.
Tora 8×4m Two separate 4m openings at the front and two at the rear. One 4m opening at each end.

For rectangular models, front and rear refer to the longer sides in LuxSol’s configuration guide. The table is an overview; use the model-by-model screen configurations to check the exact arrangement before ordering.

Compatible fixed walls are offered for nominal 3m and 4m openings. The 3m slatted wall and 4m slatted wall are separate products. There is no listed slatted-wall option for Tora’s uninterrupted 5m or 6m front and rear openings; do not plan to join smaller walls across them.

Why does the 8×4m Tora have six screen positions?

The long sides are divided into bays by intermediate posts. There are two openings at the front, two at the rear and one at each end. Each is a nominal 4m accessory position, with compatible manual screens, electric screens or slatted walls. A single eight-metre-wide screen is not the arrangement.

This layout gives you useful choices: leave a front bay open as the main entrance, screen another for low sun, and consider a fixed backdrop where it will not interrupt circulation. Confirm the whole arrangement in the builder or with LuxSol before placing the accessory order.

Plan your sides

Where should you put screens, walls and open entrances?

Begin with a furniture sketch and the routes you use most. Mark the door from the house, the path to the lawn and the space needed to pull out chairs. A fixed wall behind a sofa can feel natural; the same wall across your usual route to the garden can become an everyday inconvenience.

For a dining area, identify the side where low sun reaches seated eye level. Adjustable fabric can be useful there because the need changes during the day. Keep the serving route clear and check whether moving chairs will interfere with the screen’s operating space.

For a lounge, a fixed slatted backdrop can give the seating a more settled position. Leave the outlook open where you enjoy the garden. You do not need to fill every opening to make the space feel complete: one well-chosen side may address the main issue while preserving the openness that attracted you to a pergola.

A fixed slatted backdrop defines the edge while leaving gaps for light and air. Furniture, kitchen and other accessories are separate from the wall.

Use the pergola measuring guide to check the furniture and walking space. Then make an opening-by-opening list: purpose, accessory type, nominal size and whether you need regular access through that side. This is more useful for ordering than a note that simply says “three screens”.

Shelter & care

Do pergola sides keep out wind and rain?

Sides can add shelter, but fabric screens and open slats do not form a weather-sealed enclosure. Wind-driven rain can still reach an outdoor space, and the roof, drainage and side exposure each play a part. Do not use the apparent dryness in a lifestyle photograph as a weather-performance guarantee.

Follow the operating and care instructions for the fitted screen, including any conditions that require it to be raised. Do not apply a frame wind rating to a lowered screen or assume a fixed slatted wall makes the pergola stormproof. If you are unsure how to leave the accessories for the weather expected at your site, ask LuxSol about the exact model.

Keep the screen’s path clear of furniture and objects, and check that it moves as intended. If fabric snags, alignment changes or the control behaves unexpectedly, stop and seek advice rather than forcing it. The accessory instruction library contains the relevant fitting documents.

Can screens and slatted walls be added to an existing pergola?

Compatible LuxSol screens and slatted walls can be retrofitted, but fit should be confirmed before buying. Send the team the model, size, order details and photographs of the intended opening and fixing points. An older frame or a different generation needs checking even when the nominal size sounds familiar.

For electric screens, include the power supply and cable route in the discussion. For fixed walls, check the level and alignment needed for the wall sections to fit correctly. Have the base and frame dimensions available, and use the installation guide to agree who will carry out the work.

Budget by opening. The accessory price is not the price to screen the whole pergola, and installation or separate accessory delivery may be additional. Build a shortlist from the pergola accessories collection, then use our pergola cost guide to keep the full specification visible.

Before ordering, confirm the exact model, each side position, the chosen control and the fitting arrangements. If you are uncertain between fabric and slats, ask LuxSol to review your side configuration with your garden photographs and a simple layout sketch.

Common questions

Pergola screen and slatted-wall questions

Are pergola screens completely private?

No. LuxSol’s fabric screens provide a degree of privacy, with visibility that changes according to light and viewing angle. They are not blackout panels. Slatted walls also retain gaps between the fixed slats.

Can Aura have electric screens?

Electric screens are not an Aura option in the current configuration guide. Choose compatible manual screens or slatted walls, and confirm the opening and fitting position before ordering.

Can I mix screens, slatted walls and open sides?

Yes, where the options are compatible with the model and individual openings. Plan each side around the sun, the view and access, rather than assuming every opening needs the same treatment.

Do the slats open and close?

No. LuxSol’s slatted-wall panels use fixed horizontal aluminium slats. Choose a fabric screen if you want a side that can be raised and lowered.

How many screens does a Tora 8×4m need?

There are six separate openings if you choose to screen every side: two at the front, two at the rear and one at each end. You can leave openings clear or select compatible slatted walls instead.
