The essentials
Connect the zones. Check each appliance.
Plan an outdoor kitchen and pergola as connected parts of the garden, with cooking, serving and seating considered separately. A pergola can define the dining area, but that does not automatically make the space beneath its roof suitable for a barbecue or other cooking appliance. Confirm appliance siting, ventilation and clearances before choosing the final layout.

Decide how you will cook
What should an outdoor kitchen include?
Start with the meals you actually enjoy making outside. A barbecue with a useful preparation surface may meet your needs, while someone who regularly hosts larger groups might want more storage, serving space or refrigeration. More appliances bring more installation, care and servicing requirements.
Write a short list of essential functions before selecting modules. Include preparation, cooking, serving, clearing away and storage. Decide which tasks can continue to use the indoor kitchen; a practical outdoor setup does not have to duplicate everything inside the house.
Think about the people using the space together. A cook needs room to work while guests reach the dining table without passing close to hot surfaces. Children, pets and anyone with mobility needs should also be considered when planning the routes.
If the pergola is mainly for meals and conversation, start with our dining and lounge layout guide. Establishing a comfortable dining area gives the kitchen a clear destination to serve.
Separate cooking and seating
Where should the kitchen sit in relation to the pergola?
Begin with an open-air cooking location that meets the appliance manufacturer's instructions, then position preparation and serving areas around it. The pergola can cover the dining or lounge area nearby, subject to its own requirements. “Nearby” is a planning relationship, not a recommended distance: actual separation must follow the chosen equipment and site assessment.
Avoid placing the cook in the main route between the back door and garden. Guests should be able to reach their seats without squeezing behind someone carrying hot food. Keep enough space to open appliance lids, cupboard doors and drawers without blocking the route.
| Zone | Main purpose | What to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Cooking | Use the selected appliance in a suitable location | Manufacturer's siting, ventilation and clearance requirements |
| Preparation | Keep ingredients and utensils within practical reach | Work surface, access and appropriate materials |
| Serving | Transfer food to the dining area | A clear route away from hot equipment |
| Covered dining | Provide comfortable seating beneath the pergola | Occupied chairs, post positions and entrances |
| Storage and services | Keep the space practical to use and maintain | Access, equipment requirements and suitable connections |
Test the route while the dining chairs are occupied. A plan can look generous before people sit down and become awkward once every chair is pulled out. The large-pergola guide helps compare usable space and support arrangements for larger dining areas.
Check the exact appliance
Can you cook beneath an aluminium pergola?
Do not assume that an aluminium frame or an open louvred roof makes cooking underneath acceptable. Appliances can have restrictions on overhead structures, enclosed areas and nearby materials. Heat, smoke and grease also affect the proposed setting, and pergola components include more than the main metal frame. Fuel-burning appliances can also produce carbon monoxide; never use them in an enclosed space or allow fumes to collect in a shelter.
Obtain the installation and operating instructions for the exact barbecue, pizza oven or other appliance before planning a roof above it. Ask the appliance supplier and pergola supplier to confirm whether the proposed arrangement is suitable. Where specialist design is required, resolve it before construction rather than adding equipment beneath an existing roof later.
There is no universal clearance figure that can safely cover every appliance and pergola. Do not copy a distance from another model, assume a partly open screen provides enough ventilation or add an extractor as an unverified workaround. A manufacturer's prohibition cannot be overridden by a garden layout sketch.
For a straightforward starting brief, keep cooking in a suitable open-air position and use the pergola for dining and relaxing. Any covered cooking proposal needs its own explicit assessment. Existing showroom photography illustrates products and finishes; it is not installation approval for your chosen appliance.
Plan the working space
How should you choose outdoor-kitchen modules?
Choose the essential appliance first, then work out the preparation and storage around it. Check the size of the complete unit, the way its lid opens and the access needed for maintenance. A module's catalogue width is only one part of the working footprint.
Keep frequently used items within practical reach without crowding the cooking zone. Allow a suitable surface for preparation and serving, and think about where used dishes will go. Avoid creating a layout that requires repeated trips through seated guests for basic utensils or supplies.
If refrigeration or a sink is included, check that the product is suitable for the intended outdoor conditions and installation. Water, drainage and electrical connections need planning, and seasonal care may be required. Do not assume an indoor appliance is suitable because it sits beneath a roof.
Compare the materials and their care instructions as carefully as the appearance. Understand what can remain outside, what needs covering and how the worktops, cabinets and appliances should be cleaned. Choose a configuration you can maintain as well as one you enjoy looking at.
Prepare the complete site
What base, access and services should you plan?
Assess the supporting surface for the kitchen and the pergola separately. Fixed cabinets, worktops and appliances can create concentrated loads, while pergola posts have their own foundation and fixing requirements. A level finish alone does not establish that the construction beneath is suitable.
Agree the installation sequence before the patio is completed. The kitchen installer, pergola installer and relevant trades need compatible plans for foundations, drainage and service routes. Keep access to connections and equipment available after the furniture and screens are in place.
Have electrical work designed and installed by a qualified electrician for the outdoor location and equipment. For gas appliances and supplies, use the appropriate competent specialist and follow the manufacturer's requirements. Do not extend services casually from the house or rely on temporary arrangements as a permanent solution.
Check delivery routes for the largest modules and pergola components. Gates, corners and changes of level can affect installation even where the finished space is generous. Our installation guide explains the questions to settle about scope and responsibilities.
Connect shade and atmosphere
How do you make the dining area comfortable?
Position the seating around the times you expect to eat. Observe the sun from the actual chairs and consider the view from the house. Roof shade, low-angle sun and privacy all change across the day. Use the positioning guide before choosing a location from a midday photograph alone.
Select screens or slatted walls for a clear purpose around the seating, while retaining the access and ventilation required elsewhere in the scheme. Do not treat enclosing the cooking area as a simple way to improve comfort. Our screen comparison focuses on their different uses around a pergola.
Plan useful light on the table and the route between the kitchen and dining area. Decorative light alone may not help someone carry food or see a step. The pergola lighting guide helps organise those layers before equipment is selected.
Compare LuxSol pergola models once the dining footprint is clear. The Tora range offers larger size choices to consider for entertaining, but suitability depends on the exact dimensions, supports and overall proposal. It is not a blanket recommendation for placing cooking appliances below the roof.

How do outdoor kitchens fit with LuxSol and Olympian?
Explore Draco Grills modular kitchens through Olympian Garden Buildings, alongside your LuxSol pergola plans. Discuss the pergola with LuxSol and confirm the kitchen specification, quotation and installation scope with the kitchen team.
LuxSol Living is based at Olympian Garden Buildings, Moston Road, Sandbach, Cheshire, CW11 3JA. A showroom visit can help you compare the pergola finishes and discuss how a dining area could relate to an outdoor kitchen. Confirm which kitchen displays and configurations are available before travelling.
Bring a measured sketch, photographs of the site and details of any appliances you already own. Include doors, boundaries, services and the intended furniture. If you have not chosen an appliance yet, make that clear so the layout remains provisional until its requirements are known.
Use a consultation to organise the pergola questions and the relevant kitchen discussion. Keep the resulting quotes explicit about who supplies and fits each element, what groundwork and services are included, and what you must arrange separately.
Common questions
Outdoor-kitchen and pergola questions
Can I put a barbecue under a louvred pergola if the roof is open?
An open roof is not automatic approval. Check the exact barbecue and pergola requirements, including overhead restrictions, ventilation and clearances. Start with suitable open-air cooking and covered dining as separate zones.
Does an aluminium pergola remove fire-clearance requirements?
No. The complete installation includes other components and surrounding materials, and the appliance's instructions still apply. Metal construction alone does not establish a suitable cooking location.
Can I add a kitchen after the pergola is installed?
Possibly, but the appliance location, access, supporting base and services must be assessed. Do not assume the existing frame or patio can accommodate the new arrangement without changes.
Does LuxSol supply the Draco Grills kitchens directly?
The Draco Grills kitchen range is offered through Olympian Garden Buildings. Confirm the current supplier, quotation and fitting arrangements when enquiring; the pergola and kitchen scopes should be clear.
What should I take to a showroom consultation?
Bring a measured site sketch, photos, furniture dimensions and the exact appliance details where known. Include doors, boundaries and service locations so the discussion can cover the whole layout.
